Do You Have Enough?
Why do you spend money for what is not bread and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me and eat what is good, and delight yourself in abundance. Isaiah 55:2-3.
On what do you spend your money? your time? Your energy?
That reflects your values.
What consumes you?
If you listen to any news, you may have been buying toilet paper, or stocking up on meat. Your thoughts consumed with stock-piling and being fearful, rather than thankfulness at what God was given.
Look at your bank statement to see where your money goes.
Proverbs 23:5 says Cast but a glance at riches and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
Mine does.
I get my grocery money for the month and it’s spent in a morning on groceries. Where did it go?
Yet somehow, God makes what I purchase make it until the next month. Why do I doubt His provision?
My time is like that.
I no longer make to-do lists.
As a mom with babies and toddlers, I would become depressed at what I could NOT check off my list.
I took my aggravations out on the children if they interrupted me from getting stuff done on my list.
God convicted me that my list was not sanctioned by Him, but the needs of my family were.
C.S. Lewis said, “The great things, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s ‘own’ or ‘real’ life.
The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life
—the life God is sending one day by day;
what one calls one’s ‘real life’ is a phantom of one’s own imagination.”
Those interruptions are my day.
My children have grown past the toddler years, and I still am interrupted.
But I think I’m learning that I must give my full attention to those interruptions—a neighbor needs his flat tire changed, I drive up one of the boys to help; a snake is eating our chickens, it must be taken care of; the boys need help with school, I must stop painting.
By doing so, I have been blessed.
God gives peace and fulfillment.
I did what I should have done with the day given to me.
And amazingly, those other things that I thought were important, either get done without effort, or I find I did not need to do them.
When the same interruptions become every day occurrences, I evaluate them to see if they can be scheduled, rather than be treated as an emergency every time.
Maybe it's time to say, "No" to some things.
When I align my values with God’s, I find contentment, satisfaction, and I have enough.
He gives, like Isaiah says, “delight in abundance.”
Not of things or adventure or thrills, but of that abundance only God can give—Himself.

I write about what matters...to you---
women, wives and moms---
about your family, faith and future.
I write about what's hard, what helps and what heals.
I show you how it's done. And not done.
I hold your hand as you find what matters to the Savior.
And let go of those things that mattered to you, but not to Him.
I write about what matters...to Him.

Author of Biblical fiction, married to my best friend, and challenged by eight sons’ growing pains as I write about what matters.
How many times have we mothers lamented that we got "nothing done" today! But as you said, we accomplished what we were suppose to do, even if everything we did was "interruptions." I must remember that, I still sometimes feel that way. Thanks for your great articles, Sonya.
