A Cup of Cold Water

What if you are not appreciated for the kindness shown?
You’re not even thanked out of obligation?
This is more prevalent.
I help serve dinner at our church every Wednesday for children’s club. When I first started I was amazed at how many children and youth never said, “thank you.” 
Do I serve to receive thanks?
No! 

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Luke 6:35.

This is also helpful for mothers of young children.
Babies don’t thank you for changing their diapers. 
You do many “thankless” tasks—all—day—long.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9.

Mom’s rewards are not immediate.
Persevere.
Continue to do good.

And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward. Matthew 10:42.

I can speak from the other side—the rewards are beyond comprehension. God does bless.
On Wednesdays, I started praising those children in line who mumbled a “thanks.”
When those around them heard their praise, they started to give thanks.
Thanks is contagious.
We have a worship leader who always, always, thanks for any small contribution anyone gives.
Such an insignificant thing. 
Just a “thank you.”
Why should it matter?
It’s God’s will.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. I Thessalonians 5:16-18.

It’s absence is condemned.

How long will this wicked community grumble against Me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say: In this wilderness your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against Me. Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. Numbers 14:27-30.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. II Timothy 3:1-5.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 

What I find sad in these verses is these people knew God.
But did not give thanks.

Then I remember my complaints of this week.
Of decisions made with which I did not agree.
Of circumstances that didn’t go my way.
So easy for me to forget — what—God—has—done—for—me.

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:11-13.

There is a strength God gives when we are content.
The opposite is true.
Unthankfulness breeds a longing for things.
It breeds selfishness.
It saps our strength. 
It steals our joy.
Takes our peace.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. I Timothy 6:6-8.

Feeling unappreciated in your service for God because no one thanks you?
God sees.
He does not forget.
His rewards are eternal.
Give God thanks!
