Lies We Believe, Part 1

Following last week's article, Believing a Lie, this week we will discuss some common lies that Satan uses to try to combat what God has said.

1. We can destroy the earth.

Some of you are too young to remember when the experts told us to use plastic bags, because paper bags destroyed too many trees. When a new California law starts, stores won’t be providing any bags in order to ‘save the environment’. Do they think that by not providing bags that people will stop using them?

Remember in the 70’s when the experts foretold of a coming ice age? Temperatures were dropping. We were all going to freeze. Now we have global warming. Do they think that God can’t keep things balanced? God holds the temperature of the earth in His Hand just like He holds the individual molecules together.

Yes, we must be stewards of the earth.

Yes, we should not waste what we have.

But the basic premise that is behind all the propaganda is that we can destroy the earth. What arrogance! We have forgotten that God created the earth and that God alone will destroy it.

“But the day of the Lord will come…the heavens will pass away…and the earth and its works will be burned up.” (II Peter 3:10-12)

Instead of spending all our energy on preserving the earth, Peter says we should be people of “holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God.” ( II Peter 3:13)

2. The world is overpopulated and we must control the birthrate.

For years, Europe has restricted its population. Now they do not have a big enough work force to support their economy.

Man questions God when He said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth, and subdue it.” (Genesis 1:28, Genesis 8:7).

Do we think that we know when the earth is filled? Do we choose when not to obey His commands?

Again, what arrogance!

3. A man's environment can make him a bad person.

Can we create anything more perfect than the Garden of Eden? Man still chose evil, surrounded by the perfect environment.

Bad environments do not exempt people from their responsibility.

“There is none who seeks for God; all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none who does good…there is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:10-12, 18).

4. It takes a village to raise a child.

This premise opens the floodgates for a lot of lies.

God made the family as a unit. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)

The family unit was defined, created and blessed. The father holds responsibility for how the child is raised. “Fathers…bring (your children) up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4).

He can delegate his authority to teachers at school or pastors at church, but the father still has absolute authority over the child’s welfare.

Allowing the village to raise a child leads to communism, where the government decides the child’s education, discipline, and even what food will be eaten. Fathers then have no authority over their children. Satan’s attack on the family is complete.

5. Meat is bad.

I understand some people have allergies or conditions that require a certain diet. This is not what I am addressing.

There are some who are consumed with their diet and lose their focus on God. Paul says, “One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only. The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him… For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit…Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense.” (Romans 14:2-4, 17, 20). Does what you eat make you think about God? Are you consumed with what you will eat?

Some have elevated animals above humans. They do not eat meat to protect animals. What happens when animals are given priority over man? Examine those countries who worship the cow. In India, cows run free. The farmer, trying to grow enough food for his family, must allow cows to destroy his crop. Because the cow cannot be killed for any reason, he beats it in anger because his family starves. They do not have enough food, not because it is not available, but because of misplaced worship. Their worship turns to bitterness, hate and despair.

Animals are not humans. They do not have a soul. They are not created in God’s image.

When protecting animals dictates a person’s time, becomes their passion, and consumes their thoughts, look at the cause. Are they worshiping them?

Follow your conscience, but hone it to the Word of God. Paul says, “The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God.” (Romans 14:22). If God convicts you to abstain from certain foods, then you better obey. But if it is based on fear of the future, then put that fear in the Lord’s Hands and let Him reward you with meat. If animals control your life, put God back in His rightful place.

Examine what you believe.

Conserve the earth for tomorrow’s children, but make sure there are less children so we all have enough. Of course, we want a better environment, and since bad environments make bad people, we must make everyone’s equal. And if we all ate vegetables, everyone would have enough to eat.

It all sounds good.

If we focus on these things, we live in fear of the future. No one is in charge. Lies stir uncertainty.

Look deeper and test these things against the Word. John cautions: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…” (I John 4:1).

God has promised “perfect love casts out fear.” (I John 4:18) He holds yesterday, today and tomorrow. He holds this earth in His Hand and will decide when He is finished with it.

He gives me truth.

I obey.

I have no fear.

I am at peace.
